Study suggests not wearing Face Masks shows an increase chance of getting infected with the Coronavirus

Researchers at the Texas A&M University has found that not wearing a face mask increases the chances of a person of getting infected with Covid-19 by analyzing the data of infected people in Wuhan, Italy and New York City.

The study’s results show that airborne aerosols are the direct path in the spread of Covid-19 says Renyi Zhang, Professor of Atmospheric Science at Texas A&M.

According to the study face masks has prevented Covid-19 cases in Italy by 78,000 during April 6 to May 9.

While in New York City, face mask has prevented 66,000 in the time period from April 17 to May 19.

The research shows that face masks are useful, not only in preventing infected coughing droplets from reaching an infected person but is also crucial to avoid aerosols that infected people when talking and that can remain in the atmosphere for tens of feet said Mario Molina, a professor at University of California and recipient of 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Researchers analyze trends and mitigation (i.e. social distancing and isolation) procedures in Wuhan, Italy and New York City.

While the data gathered was provided by the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, European CDC and New York City.

However, the research didn’t specify what kind of masks we’re used and how one is more effective than the other.

Zhang also says that wearing face masks as well as enforcing social distancing and good hand hygiene well greatly reduce the chances in getting the Covid-19 virus.

Results also show that airborne respiration of aerosols are the dominant way that the Coronavirus spread.

The research shows that sound Science is essential is decision making for current and future pandemics.
